BERNARD STIEGLER

Editorial

The electronic devices that have been developed over the last decades in the domain of music, allow today a consideration of a profound renewing of the comprehension of musical phenomenon. It's in this perspective that Ircam is stimulating the conception of tools for musical analysis and computer aided listening.

Contents discretization, with an intense deployment of digital technologies, continues to conquer new territories in both every artistic field as in the scientific domain. Being a product of machinic calculability, it interrogates again mathematical and, more generally, structural formalisms. Being an interface support, it prepares new conditions for the conjunction of structure and sensibility that it's modifying. This means the beginning of a new era of musical organology involving the mobilization of completely new theoretical models. Here, technical mediation that is taken into account in the musical phenomenon (whether it has an effect on the conscience of the composer or the one of the auditor) becomes irreducible.

The central theme of musical analysis and its tools of this year's edition of Resonances were chosen to instruct profoundly those stakes. A conference will investigate the current question of analysis parallel both in the domain of electroacoustic music and according to concepts of Set Theory. It will be concluded in a communal day where analysis practice and its tools will be explored as a moment of composition.

In another perspective that aims to unite those questions, a conference will be held on October 17th introducing the project "signed listening", which presents the creation of a computer aided tool for listening and its formalization.
