Surface Elaboration of Pitch-Class Sets Through the Manipulation of Nonpitched Parameters

Abstract

This talk explores strategies for compositionally elaborating pitch-class sets as local surface gestures using nonpitched parameters. From a cognitive standpoint, register, dynamics, articulation, rhythm, timbre, and temporal proximity influence the perception of local grouping structures. Compositional techniques are illustrated with excerpts from Echoes' White Veil and other works by the author.
