RIAM PROJECTS ON SOUND TECHNOLOGIES

-  Date : Thursday, October 23rd 2003, 6:30pm to 8pm
-  Venue : Ircam, salle Igor-Stravinsky
-  Access conditions : Free entrance

The network RIAM (Recherche et Innovation en Audiovisuel et Multimédia) was launched by the ministry of Economy, Finances and Industry, the ministry of Research, the ministry of Culture and Communication through the CNC. It appeals to professionals of the movie industry, audiovisual and multimedia companies and aims to facilitate circulation and sharing of information, to encourage partnerships between public research laboratories, companies and all actors who are involved. RIAM offers orientations and strategic main lines of research.

An invitation for a constant submission of projects was launched in 2003 and includes following topics :

-Digitalization of movie and television production ;
-Electronic edition, interactive programs, animation and synthesis image ;
-Digitalization, content indexation and audiovisual flux organization ;
-Intellectual property rights and their protection ;
-New diffusion platforms of programs ;
-Socio-economy and the use of audiovisual and multimedia.

Within the framework of this session, we will concentrate on new technologies for music and audio in general by the presentation of the following projects :

-  PHASE

This project aims to develop a system of sound generation by making to interfere sound immersion, gesture with haptic return and visual immersion. The coherence of those interactions will be assured through a model and object methods bringing together different physical and sensorial behavior. The suggested musical demonstrator prefigures systems of larger diffusion (schools, conservatories, etc.) and even, in the long-term, systems for the large public (synthesizers having a haptic command).
Speakers : Xavier Rodet (Ircam), Roland Cahen (Ircam, to be confirmed)
Partners : Ondim, Haption, CEA, Ircam

-  DVD on demand

The aim is the realization of system able to produce a 'DVD on demand' by using a DVD video. It's based on a concept of a shared database giving the user an access to local and distant resources and is completed by a system of localization, identification and description of digital items that will be developed including domain standards (DOI®, MPEG7, MPEG21). The management of rights is based, on one hand, on the same shared database system and, on the other hand, on the principal of a "confident third" already started in previous developments.
Speakers : Philippe Thorel, (MPO Online), Jérome Barthélemy and Julien Bloit (Ircam)
Partners : Hypermedia Studio of Ircam, MPO, the European leader of CD pressing and precursor of services of CD on demand.

-  Arezzo (to be confirmed)

This project aims the creation and the development of an interactive multimedia environment for distant music education : application to the study of music theory, harmony, melody, counterpoint, improvisation and arrangement.
Partners : ClickNPlayMusic and the Centre of Computer Research of the Ecole des Mines of Paris.
