Alain Bonardi

Senior Lecturer, Paris 8 University

Alain Bonardi is a Senior Lecturer in the Art and Technology Department in Paris 8 University and a full-member of the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord in the "Virtual Environment and Creation" thema. He is also a former engineer diplomed of the Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Supérieure des Télécommunications in Paris.

Along his scientific studies, he has achieved musical studies with Michel Philippot and Emmanuel Nunes. His creations, often related to opera, sometimes deal with musical composition (chamber opera Du/Tri-plicata with the chinese playwright Chun-Yan Ning, 1998, supported by the Beaumarchais association), sometimes with scenography (interactive scenography of Norma by Bellini, produced in 2001 with singers from the Opera Bastille), or new media (CD-ROM based opera Virtualis in preparation). In all these projects he is interested in the contribution of new technologies to man to machine dialogue in artistic context.

Since 2000, a major part of his research has been dealing with interactive relationships between 3D image, music and sound : he designed a software named Alma that enables to create immersive playable scenes from relationships between musical and visual structures. This kind of tools may be applied to musical analysis, and Alain Bonardi is working more and more on the issue of sound visualization.
