Neil McKenzie

Composer

Born in 1980, Neil McKenzie studied under Hugh Johnstone MBE and competed successfully in performance as a Brass soloist at aboth a national and European level. He took an interest in recording which has been developed and sustained through professional study. Undertook a Joint Masters in Music and Electronics at Glasgow University. He studied minimalism, twelve tone serialism and Indian and World composition and performance. This composition knowledge was integrated with that of computer music and a grounding in this genre was attained by creating performances and compositions in CSound, MAX/MSP, Pd and Jmax. His electronics knowledge base allowed performances and live recordings to be made running these programs on a Linux platform to compose for Eight speakers in a surround environment. The electronics elements and system design basis of the degree allowed audio programming elements to be built from base elements in C, C++ and Java. Neil McKenzie undertook a European placement in Amsterdam, working on the Talking Music Project.

Graduated in July 2003 with a First Class Joint Honours IEE Master of Engineering in Electronics and Music. He remains active in composition and has had works performed at festivals in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Adelaide.
