Goffredo Haus

Director of the LIM at the University of Milan, Italy.

Prof. Goffredo Haus is known for his research in computer models for music and multimedia. Haus's approach to music and multimedia description and processing was mainly based on Petri nets and DSP techniques.

Since 1985 he has established at the Computer Science Dept. of the State University of Milan and, since then, directed the Laboratorio di Informatica Musicale (LIM). He has supervised, at that or other universities, about 150 master and PhD theses.
He is associate full in the Computer Science area at the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences of the State University of Milan. He teaches several courses : Theory of Information and Transmission, Computer Science Applications in Sound, Computer Science Applications in Music, Foundations of Programming, Foundations of Computer Science, Multimedia Digital Archives.

He has also directed computer music and multimedia projects of industrial interest, and carried out didactic and other cultural activities, both inside and outside academy. Currently he is involved in a number of music and multimedia electronic publishing projects. The most relevant is the project concerning the rescuing of the Musical Archive at Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Prof. Haus published about a hundred scientific papers, and also dozens of other kinds of publications, including a number of books and CD-ROMs concerning computer applications in music.

In 1992, he co-initiated (with Denis Baggi) the IEEE Computer Society Task Force on Computer Generated Music, that in 1994 became the Technical Committee on Computer Generated Music ; he is the vice-chair of the TC.
In 2001 he has started the IEEE Standards Association Working Group on Music Application of XML ; he is the Official Reporter of the WG.
