Rosemary Mountain

President of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community

Rosemary Smith Mountain was born in Montreal, Canada in 1954, and has been with Harry Mountain, sculptor/writer, since 1975. Her life has been characterized by an exploration of cultures, arts, religions, and lifestyles. After exploring Canada from coast to coast in the context of their respective educations, Harry's increasing fascination with the ancient Celts led them to Europe. The exploration was greatly facilitated when Rosemary obtained a full-time post in music at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, from 1993 to 1999, after finally completing her Ph.D. from the University of Victoria (Canada).

They returned to Montreal in 1999, where Rosemary has been teaching theory, composition and electroacoustics at Concordia University, and helping to launch Hexagram, a new inter-university Institute for Digital Arts and Technology. Her appreciation of diversity has led her to reflect on the need for more sophisticated tools for discourse about sound in "pure" and multimedia contexts, and she is currently developing a playful classification system called The Multimedia Thesaurus. She continues to compose both acoustic and electroacoustic works, and has just been appointed Chair of the Music Department.
